BRAHMS Tragic Overture
MOZART Piano Concerto No. 17 in G, K453
BRUCKNER Symphony No. 1 (1877 Linz edition)
VLADIMIR JUROWSKI conductor
ALEXANDRA SILOCEA piano
Anton Bruckner was always proud of his First Symphony – of its impish charm and confident bravura. He even gave it a racy little nickname. But deep down he knew his strong, impetuous work would need little verbal bolstering. In reality, it would impress anyone who heard it – a bold statement to herald the launch of one of the greatest symphonic careers.
Before it in this concert comes one of Mozart’s most charming concertos including a gregarious and catchy finale that presents variations on a tune said to have been whistled by the composer’s pet starling. Brahms’s imposing overture opens this concert led by the Orchestra’s Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski.
