London Philharmonic Orchestra - March 2019

Elegy And Triumph

Sunday 24 March 2019

Congress Theatre

Glinka Overture, Ruslan and Ludmilla
Elgar Cello Concerto
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5

Darrell Ang conductor
Kian Soltani cello

After two years away, the London Philharmonic Orchestra return to the Congress Theatre. There’s a good reason why Elgar’s Cello Concerto is one of the nation’s favourite pieces, though it’s hard to believe it’s 100 years old this year. Like any true classic, it always sounds new – and in the hands of a cellist as insightful and as poetic as the young Austrian-Persian star Kian Soltani it’ll feel fresher than ever. Conductor Darrell Ang will bring all his charisma to a programme that begins with Glinka’s firecracker of an overture, and ends in the triumph of Tchaikovsky’s unashamedly autobiographical Fifth Symphony: music that the composer wanted to be played “with passion and desire”.
